Special thanks to all of our donors and volunteers for their help and support in making Kids With a Call such a great success.Program Summary
Kids With A Call, Inc. (KWAC) is a year-round afterschool and Out-of-School Time (OST) program that will engage children and youth ages 5 to 15 in the Tampa Bay area, in enrichment activities in music, chorus, art, readers’ theater and martial arts. The curriculum lessons are designed to promote literacy and critical thinking skills, teach discipline, promote teamwork, camaraderie, responsibility, and patriotism, enhance racial and cultural understanding, and promote physical and spiritual strength. Planned field trips will promote careerism and performing before an audience will help to create a sense of value.
Community Need
The economic impact of not engaging students and having them drop out of school is staggering. Research released in 2007 showed that among 20-year olds in the U.S. today, more than 700,000 of them dropped out of high school. Reports from Levin, Belfielf, Muenning and Rouse announced that the government could collect “$45 billion via extra tax revenues and reduced costs of public health, of crime and justice and in welfare payments” if we engaged and retained just half of those students and guided them to graduation. The National Dropout Preventive Center has identified 15 effective strategies that have the most positive impact on the dropout rate. Top on the list of effective strategies is ‘After-School Opportunities’. Kids With A Call, Inc was founded by a Hillsborough County Public School educator, Joycelyn Carpenter in 2009 in an effort to continue to provide Out-of-School time (OST) programs to children and youth in the Tampa Bay area.
